What are VOCs and why should they be avoided?

VOC stands for Volatile Organic Compound.

VOCs are solvents derived from hydrocarbons which evaporate into the atmosphere.

When these man-made solvents evaporate at ground level they cause atmospheric pollution which contributes to climate change.

The move to a carbon free environment means that, wherever possible, we should seek alternative products with a similar or better performance that eliminates or significantly reduces the need for the use of VOCs.

Water based Enduro Hand Sanitiser and Enduro Hand Disinfectant are virtually VOC free, unlike hand sanitisers based upon isopropyl alcohol.

Further advantages of moving to water based hand sanitisers are:

  • Eliminates warning phrase H224 i.e. highly flammable.
  • Eliminates warning phrase H336 i.e. may cause drowsiness or dizziness.

From a performance point of view:

  • Enduro Hand Sanitiser and Enduro Hand Disinfectant are effective against C.difficileIsopropyl Alcohol (IPA) hand sanitisers are not effective against C.difficile
  • Enduro Hand Sanitiser and Enduro Hand Disinfectant are residual for up to 4 hours after application – IPA is not residual.

Peer review - NHS Trial : Detergent wipes vs Enduro Hygiene Wipes

This trial sought to determine whether the introduction of a hand wipe before meals reduces microbial load and whether a biocide wipe (Enduro Hygiene Wipes) or detergent wipe (PDI Hygea) has a different level of performance. The results were overwhelming in favour of Enduro Hygiene Wipes.

Hand Hygiene has been identified as the primary intervention to prevent Health Care Associated Infections (HCAIs), transmitted by health care staff which accounted for 9000 deaths in England. This infection can be be significantly reduced by the adoption of good hand hygiene practice.

In the UK it is recognised that nearly 40% of all hospital patients have hands contaminated with at least one pathogen including MRSA.

The views and feedback of patients using Enduro Hygiene Wipes were very satisfied with the wipes in that it left their hands feeling more refreshed. Furthermore, patients were asked whether Enduro Hygiene Wipe smell was acceptable after its use. Over 90% of patients stated the wipes smelt satisfactory and the odour on the hands was pleasant.

This trial also recommend that the use of detergent wipes should be restricted or removed from patient care areas in favour of Enduro Hygiene Wipes.

Why was the Enduro range created?

With the many challenges that Hospital Workers and Medical Staff face daily, we wanted to ensure Hand Hygiene was not another obstacle for workers to overcome.

We recognised that traditional products are not always suitable for repeated, everyday use by everyone, everywhere and that this could be a barrier to the products being used correctly.

In creating the patent-pending Enduro Hand & Skin range we wanted to offer one product that could be used throughout the whole hospital by patients, staff and visitors alike and that would offer quick, effective and safe protection against spores, bacteria, fungi and mycobacteria.

Where should I use Enduro products?

The Enduro Hand & Skin range is perfect for use throughout the hospital as well as in the home.

The Enduro Hand & Skin range is water-based and alcohol free and has been dermatologically tested using a 24 hour skin patch test which “showed no adverse dermatological effect when in contact with human skin for 24 hours”

Enduro Hand Disinfectant:
Long lasting, quick drying Enduro Hand Disinfectant is designed for everyday use on hands - any time, any where!

Enduro Hygiene Wipes:
Use one wipe for each part of the body and ensure wipes are discarded hygienically, according to your standard waste disposal procedures.

All Enduro Hand & Skin Products are designed for external use only.

Do Enduro products contain alcohol?

In addition,it also been tested to EN 14347 (a suspension test designed to evaluate basic sporicidal activity) against Bacillus cereus and Bacillus subtilis spores.

Has Enduro Hand Disinfectant been tested to EN 1500?

Yes, Enduro Hand Disinfectant has been tested and passed EN 1500 by the NHS Hospital Infection Research Laboratory, Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, UK.

This EN 1500 test is designed to offer a direct comparison between water-based hand disinfectants and 60% propan-2-ol and assesses the number of organisms released from the finger tips of artificially contaminated hands after disinfection with both products.

The product tested only passes if the mean log reduction is "not significantly inferior" to results gained using 60% propan-2-ol.

Furthermore, Enduro Hand Disinfectant has also been tested to EN 1499 (suitability as hygienic handscrub) and EN 12791 (efficacy as surgical hand disinfectant) and passes both with flying colours:

  • EN 1499: "The activity of Enduro Hand Disinfectant... is significantly greater than that of the reference soft soap"
  • EN 12971: “Continues to show residual antimicrobial effect ... after 3 hours of normal activity while the reference products [60%propan-2-ol] shows significantly less activity after this time”

Why is being alcohol free important?

Isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) is recognized as being a chemical which contributes to Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions.

VOCs are carbon containing chemicals that react with sunlight and the atmosphere to cause smog. There is growing concern worldwide about the use of VOCs in industry and in some non-medical industries there is a move to drastically limit the use of Alcohol in operations.

Additionally, Isopropyl Alcohol is flammable. It should be kept away from heat and open flame and needs to be stored in dry well ventilated areas.

Furthermore, Isopropyl Alcohol evaporates in open air very quickly, which means wipes and gels can dry out quickly.

Finally, traditional alcohol hand gels have been known to stain hospital floors over time.

The Enduro range of water-based and alcohol free products:

  • Have no flammability issues
  • Require no special storage arrangements
  • Do not evaporate in open air
  • Do not stain surfaces or clothing
  • Offer residual protection for up to 4 hours after application

What is the VOC content of Enduro Hand & Skin products?

Enduro Hand & Skin products have negligible VOC content.

Do water-based products last longer than other products?

Enduro Hand & Skin products are water-based and alcohol free and are designed to offer up to 4 hour residual protection after application. On top of this, the chemicals used in the Enduro products are designed so that they do not evaporate immediately when in contact with the open air.

To validate these claims, Enduro Hand Disinfectant has been residuality tested against E.coli after 4 hours application on a surface and is shown to continue to provide biocidal activity.

Furthermore, when tested according to EN 12791 (efficacy as surgical hand disinfectant), Enduro Hand Disinfectant continued "to show residual antimicrobial effect ... after 3 hours of normal activity while the reference products [60%propan-2-ol] shows significantly less activity after this time”.
